About IBT:
The South African housing shortage continues to worsen amid the delivery of homes that are still more focused on quantity rather than quality. Government and Department of Human Settlements’ stakeholders had committed to deliver 1.5 million housing opportunities by 2019.
The Minister of Human Settlements placed emphasis on such delivery, more especially on government’s ability to deliver housing faster, better and more efficiently through innovative solutions.
Human Settlements tasked the NHBRC to play a more prominent role in piloting IBTs in the subsidised housing sector for low-income persons in terms of the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act, as amended (No. 95 of 1998) and contribute towards finding solutions for performance issues.

Background to IBTs
Innovative building technologies (IBTs) demonstrate significant value-adding attributes to construction products and according to studies, could reduce construction costs and time, and even improve the construction quality for relevant IBT systems.
Greater efforts need to be made to raise the uptake of technological innovation in housing in South Africa as societal progress is essential to improving a country’s living standards. IBTs can assist in addressing government’s subsidy housing dilemmas with regard to the national housing backlog and the quality of such homes. Over time, innovative building technologies will become more streamlined to be environmentally friendly.

NHBRC IBT Projects
In extension of the innovative building technology research being conducted at the Eric Molobi Innovation Hub, the CRHI is researching and introducing new innovative products, methods and technologies within the homebuilding industry.
Due to limited information on the performance of Innovative Building Systems, the NHBRC is researching structural performance of all registered ( with the NHBRC) Innovative Building systems across the country, to determine if such systems meet the minimum NHBRC standards requirements on structural performance without a need to maintain the structural integrity of that system.
Thus far the following has been a national exercise for the Centre for Research and Housing Innovation Department within the NHBRC. The beneficiaries were identified in partnership with the Provincial Departments of Human Settlements, Local Municipalities and Provincial Department of Social Development and the criteria included destitute families, persons with disabilities and child headed families.
