Polokwane â Council members of the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) today assessed building standards in and around Polokwane in order to highlight the importance of regulation in the housing industry.
NHBRC Member of Council Themba Dlamini highlighted that the NHBRC will not tolerate any non-compliance and shoddy workmanship from homebuilders.
âWe are visiting provinces to in order to monitor and evaluate how building standards are being upheld on the ground and ensure that consumers are protected from poorly constructed buildings,â said Dlamini.
NHBRCâs Provincial Manager Nurse Chavalala said that each housing unit is assessed at various stages of construction to ensure that problems are identified early and rectified as soon as possible.
âNHBRC inspections are designed to mitigate against risks associated with building a new home and to protect consumers against shoddy workmanship. A newly enrolled home is subjected to a minimum of four and a maximum of eight inspections depending on the enrolment value of the home. This includes foundation, structure of the house and roofing,â she said
Council members visited projects in Bendor and Solomondale.
Chavalala said that the NHBRC works closely with contractors and builders to ensure that contractors and home owners recognise that they too have a role to play in the delivery of quality homes.
She further encouraged homeowners and buyers to exercise caution when dealing with contractors/ developers/builders by ensuring that they verify their registration with the NHBRC in the first instance.
Consumers have a responsibility to use a registered contractor, which offers them protection from poor construction as well as compensation from the NHBRC Warranty Fund, should any structural defects become apparent within the first five years of occupation.
