The National Home builders Registration Council (NHBRC) is currently rolling out an Inspector Training Programme to sharpen the skills of home inspectors in a bid to clampdown on shoddy workmanship in the Eastern Cape Province.
The training programme is offered to municipal building inspectors and Human Settlements Departmental inspectors to enhance their skills and technical capabilities in an effort to curb poor workmanship during construction.
The NHBRC inspector training programme was launched in the OR Tambo Region in partnership with the Provincial Department of Human Settlements and OR Tambo District Municipality.
The three-day training programme is facilitated by an NHBRC accredited training specialist and it focuses on home building technical standards, building regulations and construction processes.
The NHBRCâs Provincial Manager Nombasa Ngoqo said the training is aimed at enhancing performance of inspectors and to keep them abreast of the new building and technological advancements.
âOur training programme focuses on soils, foundations, super structure, roof and finishing, health and safety including alternative and innovative technology. We want to keep our internal inspectors and government abreast of the latest developments and trends in the construction sector,â she said.
Ngoqo says OR Tambo Region was identified as a hotspot due to the high number of non-compliances with the home building standards and regulations experienced in the area.
âIn our engagement with the provincial Department of Human Settlements and municipalities we identified a need to sharpen the skills and technical knowledge of our inspectors so that we can decisively deal with non-complying builders in order to protect housing consumers.â
Ngoqo added that the training will be roll out in all eight district municipality of the province with a view of enhancing the quality of homes built in the province and curb the use of cheap and substandard building materials.
