FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 02, 2025

The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) expresses its deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic collapse of a retaining wall in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal. Our thoughts are with those who have been impacted by this unfortunate incident.

Preliminary information indicates that the collapsed structure was a retaining wall on an old property. The main house remains unaffected by the incident, this was confirmed by our home inspector who was present on Saturday immediately after hearing about the tragic incident.

While this structure does not fall under the NHBRC’s regulatory framework for newly built homes, we remain committed to promoting safe and sustainable building practices across South Africa. We urge property owners to conduct regular maintenance and structural assessments of aging buildings and retaining walls to ensure their safety and structural integrity.
