The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) Women Empowerment Programme scooped an award for the Most Innovative Training Programme at the 3rd annual Women in Construction Awards.

We are very honoured by this award, says NHBRC chief executive officer Mongezi Mnyani. Recognition by the industry tells us that we are being effective in our efforts to change the way women are represented in the construction industry.

In 2014, NHBRC partnered with the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) to develop the Women Empowerment Programme, which aims to develop leadership potential and boost business skills for women in the construction industry. It is a four-month academic programme with networking and mentorship support.

So far 100 women have participated in the Women Empowerment Programme.

Women are grossly underrepresented in the South African construction industry and with our Women Empowerment programme we aim to bring about transformation in this regard, says Mnyani.

The Women in Construction Awards was held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Wednesday, May 13, 2015. The awards form part of the annual African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo, which aims to create dialogue among government policy decision-makers and the private sector, as well as to promote, enhance and strengthen international and regional partnerships.
